Feature Req: Configuration for options in document-level toggles

Open robinovitch61 opened this issue 1 year ago • 15 comments

First, THANK YOU for this amazing software! It really improves the experience of my remarkable.

Small request/suggestion: I'd like to have the "Automatic Updates" toggle removed from the Document-level toggles. I want to always keep this off and update the OS only when I mean to. If I accidentally toggle it on and it updates, it may be very inconvenient if I'm unable to restore all my custom config quickly in the new version.

I like the other document level toggle options and would like to keep it enabled and them present.

When you want to keep the setting on all the time, avoid the option of this enhancement and don't accidentally press the button.

I'd like to keep Automatic Updates off all the time, and still have access to the other Document-level toggles, but not have Automatic Updates present there so there isn't even the chance I accidentally press that toggle.

That being said, if the answer is "we're going to leave it there, just be careful not to press it", that's fine :)

I understand. I have that setting turned off - I don't need it.

So I'm fine with it.

I think some kind of visual warning just in case you forget to turn it off following an update is more important than having the on/off toggle itself. But even if the on/off toggle remains, the warning when it's left turned on is not a bad idea:

visual warning for auto updates

That would be marginally better, but I'd still prefer not having it there at all rather than adding a warning to it. It's a rare action compared to the other toggles, so leaving the current document and going to setting to update seems fine, and has potentially negative consequences if you accidentally bump it on (and miss the warning if there is one).

Additionally, perhaps it could allow you only to turn it off but not on. Such as being grayed out when it's turned off.

I guess you're right.

That would work for me personally, but may be confusing behavior for others unaware of the context ("I see this toggle, why is it now locked?")

Small price to pay for being protected from disaster.

Let me try to summarize this:

  • It's good to keep an eye on the Switch so you can be sure that AutoUpdate won't kick us out of the hacks.
  • A user who uses the hacks intensively will usually have all toggles on, except for the auto-updates.

Wouldn't it then make sense to negate this option, i.e. "Disable Updates" and always keep it "ON"?

My summary is:

  • I almost never want to turn on autoupdate, and it's trivial for me to remember to turn it off after the rare update
  • I definitely never want to accidentally turn on autoupdate
  • I will often toggle some of the other options in the Document-level toggles, e.g. turning wifi off to conserve battery, turning the clock off to stop myself counting minutes, etc.
  • To minimize the odds of me accidentally turning on autoupdate while I toggle these other awesome convenient controls, I'd like for the autoupdate toggle to not be there at all

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to add a sub-menu in the hacks configuration to make it possible to select which toggles are displayed in the document-level menu.

OK - and are you finally considering a new icon? A gear icon or even an rm-hack icon? When we have smaller panel icons and now space enough?

Why have it in the sharing icon? That doesn't make sense to me.

I don't think it is necessary to open a new issue for my suggestion: Not sure which option you plan to include in this but I would like to have in-document toggles for

  • the fast UI
  • the switch of the vertical and horizontal quicktool bar. Thank you :)

That would be best. I have this option turned off because there's too much stuff.

Wasn't there an implementation in 0.010? Too bad.
