Grouped columns in tableby

Have switched to tableby from a different table making package but can't find how to do this.

Have tried tableby(cohort + smoking_status ~ grouped_age) to no effect. Couldn't find this mentioned in the vignette either. Have I just missed it somewhere?

Unfortunately, the best I can do is to suggest a paste0(cohort, smoking_status) on the left-hand side. We use knitr::kable() for table rendering and haven't gone as far as to switch to gt or kableExtra yet. I'll keep this open as a feature request and see what I can do.
