Backup is 0 bytes

I noticed that an automated weekly backup was 0 bytes. I then carried out a manual Backup now! by email and watched and waited while it created the backup. This too was 0 bytes. I am not aware that anything has changed, and would welcome suggestions of how to troubleshoot.
