pgfplotsthemetol and \pgfplotsset{compat=1.9} issue

Please have a look at this LaTeX Stack Exchange question I posted. For now the workaround solves the problem but maybe you can do something so if the user sets compat for another version it automatically overrides your statement.

As you can see in the comment from @samcarter, the issue arises as a consequence of metropolis instructing to load \pgfplotsset{compat=1.9} at the end of the preamble.
