What @mkasberg says is correct. Since this isn't a bug in Jekyll itself, I'll close this issue.
This will be fixed by #9552. You'll need to wait for a new Jekyll release and for the GitHub pages gem to update.

Wildcards haven't traditionally been supported in those fields because they're unsafe due to [path traversal attacks](https://owasp.org/www-community/attacks/Path_Traversal). While path traversal attacks don't have the same impact on a static site generator...
