I'm sorry - would you mind posting a very small example of code you think should work but doesn't? It wasn't immediately obvious to me what you mean.

Sorry Matthew, I should have been more clear.

suppose the "long version" of a journal name in journal_abbreviations.txt contains "and",
and suppose your .bib file contains the same long journal name but with "and" replaced by "&",

then jabbrv will fail to replace the long journal name by the short journal name.

Instead Jabbrv's pattern matching should be a bit smarter - and thus aware that "and" and "&" are synonyms,
