I confirm (by marking "x" in the [ ] below: [x]):

Summary After upgrade to version 5.1.0: emoji embedded in text are blurred, singleton emoji are sharp.

Environment

  • Operating System: Ubuntu 20.04
  • Mattermost Desktop App version: 5.1.0
  • Mattermost Server version: 6.5.0

Steps to reproduce Simply use the desktop client and read/write a message containing emoji.

Expected behavior All emoji (especially emoji embedded in text) should render sharp, as they did before the upgrade to 5.1 (from some version 4.?).

Observed behavior Only singleton emoji are rendered sharp. See: emoji

Possible fixes Unknown.

This is likely an issue with the Chromium render on Linux with Electron, will have to investigate to see if we can do anything about it ourselves.

This wasn't reproducible by anyone on the team.

@oGkgN Is this still happening for you? Have you tried upgrading your Ubuntu to the latest LTS, or upgrading to the newest version of the Desktop App v5.1.1?

Yes, it is still happening, even with v5.1.1. Upgrading to the latest Ubuntu LTS is not an option.

Opening this up to anyone who can reproduce it and might be able to fix it.

@oGkgN One more thing we could try: the latest nightly build from here, it's using Electron v19.

I confirm this happening on 5.1.1 macOS desktop app, at first I thought I just don't see that good anymore :)

Also it looks like links previews are blurry too, I can't be sure because have nothing to compare it with but I don't remember it that way before.

EDIT: tried 5.2.0 nightly build and it seems to be fixed there (both emojis and link previews):

I'm seeing blurry emojis on the desktop client on Windows. (version 5.1.1). after pressing ctr+ to enlarge the text, the emojis got in focus, but the react emojis are now blurred.

@MHeymann @oGkgN Can you try the latest nightly build from here? It might be fixed in an Electron upgrade.

I have this issue too, only in the client, not in the browser.

This is also still happening for me on the Windows desktop client, version 5.1.1.

Appears to be fixed in 5.2.0 desktop client for me.
