Enhancement: Warn user if they redundantly double track by having both the standard tracking code & MTM pageview active
Almost daily the Cloud team gets a Support email from a customer who complains "The Matomo pageviews are higher than Google Analytics. In fact they seem to be double of my pageviews in GA."
Can we warn the user when they are accidentally double tracking by having both the standard tracking code implementation as well as the Matomo Tag Manager with a Pageview tag?
@atom-box Q: could you please confirm approx how many people have reported this issue in the last 2 months or so?
This is a problem I see also often (around once every other month...) in the Matomo forum...
Thanks a lot for the feedback @heurteph-ei @atom-box :+1:
Could you help me understand, how do people get in this situation - for example:
- do you know if they first tracked manually and then installed MTM and forgot to remove the manual code?
- is it the case for most people that the solution is to remove the manual tracking code? (because they prefer to use MTM?)
do you know if they first tracked manually and then installed MTM and forgot to remove the manual code?
Hard to say....
is it the case for most people that the solution is to remove the manual tracking code? (because they prefer to use MTM?)
Absolutely :-)
Yes, they start with Standard JS tracker.
Then they add MTM.
e.g. here is one user:
We are a web agency and up to this point we always used standard Matomo tracking (without the Tag Manager) on our client's sites. We now need to track how many times a specific tag is being clicked. We therefore enabled the Tag Manager and followed your docs[1] to set up a container, a trigger and a tag. We did that and included the new js snippet. We now have two snippets on our page, once the standard tracking to track the whole page and once the tag manager. Now we are stuck. Where can we see the data recorded by this trigger? And is it ok to have both the standard snippet and the Tag Manager snippet on the same page? We found several discussions (e.g. [2], link in german) which stated that a) you can't have both snippets on one page and b) you have to additionally add new goals in matomo. Tbh we're a bit lost right now and your docs can't seem to answer these questions.
- Do we need the tag manager to track how many times a specific is being clicked?
- Is it ok to have both the standard and tag manager tracking scripts on the same page?
- If not, how can we have a) a tracking which tracks the whole page, just like the standard tracking does and b) track using these new triggers?
- Where can we see the data recorded by the Tag Manager?
