Guide for Enforcing Lowercase Internal Search Queries in Matomo

Open Chardonneaur opened this issue 6 months ago • 4 comments

Hello team,

I've noticed that in our current Matomo setup, searches in the internal search engine treat differently cased keywords as distinct entries. For instance, searches like 'cat', 'Cat', and 'CAT' are considered separate. This could potentially lead to fragmented data and a less efficient analysis.

I propose that we enhance our documentation with a section dedicated to addressing this issue. Specifically, we can include instructions on how to modify our JavaScript integration to ensure that all search terms are converted to lowercase before being sent to Matomo. This would streamline our data and make it more uniform, allowing for more accurate tracking and analysis of user search behavior.

Can you/someone help me understand:

  • should search stay capitalisation sensitive?
  • what are the pros/cons of each option?

We can certainly update the documentation, but before we do that it'd be good to understand if we're applying the preferred search mechanic in the first place 😄

Usually in other products/services the search behaves case insensitive until a keyword is placed in quotes, then it's trying to find exact matches. That's just in case we wanted to change how this currently works, otherwise lowercasing the search phrase might be the simplest tweak.

I am thinking that we could also add a checkbox in the admin settings to force to put it all lowercase.

I'd really love that checkbox! :-)
