math, displaymath environments
LaTeX supports \begin{math}...\end{math} and \begin{displaymath}...\end{displaymath}; in fact $...$, \[...\] etc. are just shorthands for these environments. Could MathJax support these? Currently they produce an error, whether used inside math delimiters or outside.
[Why do I care (aside from latex compatibility on general principles)? In the context of math in markdown, I'm sceptical there can be concensus on delimiters and want some common-denominator syntax that could work "everywhere", irrespective of shorthand delimiters of implementor's choice — even if annoyingly verbose. I suddenly rememebered LaTeX has environments for inline & display math :-), only to discover MJ doesn't support them :-(]
Sounds reasonable enough to me.
Still actual. The VNote and ReText can't render the equation below (both use MathJax):
\begin{displaymath}
\lim_{n \to \infty}
\sum_{k=1}^n \frac{1}{k^2}
= \frac{\pi^2}{6}
\end{displaymath}
but Pandoc-based applications show it as expected:
$ pandoc showmath.md -s -o out.pdf
$ xdg-open out.pdf
