Shell freezing when trying to open apps

Describe the bug Material Shell keeps freezing when I try to open apps and I end up needing to restart the OS.

Expected behavior I expected the shell not to freeze when I try to open apps.

To Reproduce

• Occurs on:
  • [X] X.Org
  • [ ] Wayland
• GNOME Shell version: 42.3.1
• Distro: POP OS 20.04
• Steps to reproduce, if applicable:

1. Try to open an app trough a new tab, or trough app search.
2. The OS freezes and I end up needing to restart.

Current commit I get "fatal: not a git repository (or any of the parent directories): .git" when running the command. It's probably this one: 8e6c6e3f125d6d5248522a05daf700b3e461d1b9

Yes. In fact, the pop shell itself is disabled. I've just noticed that this was from a few days ago. I'll try and post the recent logs after a crash.

I've checked it again and this is indeed the logs I get right before it freezes. This one might better since I don't see the mention of the app in the first log at all. Here it clearly mentions Nautilus.

at the end the display is sometimes restored, but i cant access the windows anymore (see them but they are stuck in terms of image and unable to interact) but the cursor can still be moved.

sounds like a good hint, I'm not quite sure about this. but mostly i can recall the issues happened related to the launcher less to none ( not sure about this) when opened windows over shortcuts.

@PapyElGringo there is no build in kill of the display server in case material shell is stuck or?

when i open a lot of windows and rly quickly close them via a shortcut it than triggers a failure / restart of x11. it may be a send commands to an outdated / invalid pointer, but usually this kind of stuff should then be ignored by the server i did reproduce this error on my wayland host machine, but you need to put the cpu under some load so that there is a noticeable delay.

i might have a better solution, but i can promise. just opened 50+ times htop and other windows. but not a solid proof of this bug being gone. and i kept trying and sure it happened...

also i noticed it when i used some other kind of launcher that it occurred as well, i don't think its a launcher related issue.

i think its this dam typescript speed , i slowed the handling of drawing the border for a new spawned window and the bug seems gone ( until now...) maybe it just needs again a few hours to occur. but i tried hard with opening may new windows over the launcher.

okay on x11 the issue seems to be minor since it just restarts the server. but i also got a freeze when closing windows. (like 100+ windows closed, one of these actions caused the x11 server to crash, so i think its something more general windows related and not specific to the app launcher)

its also not the draw border event which could cause this...

it seems to be a issue caused when getting window attributes from the server since the window state "click anywhere to launch" so not started windows but already drawn when mass closing it does not cause any bugs. (so far)

Yeah, I wouldn't mind the freezes if didn't need to restart after it. I already get self restarts sometimes, and they aren't that bad.

sure you use x11 ? maybe its because i'm testing on a vm or its because the try statements i added but i just get a x11 restart, which means you have a freeze for like 5 seconds the server restarts and you can continue to work in session since the previous state gets restored. (related to the freeze caused by quickly mass closing windows, i could not reproduce the freeze when opening many windows via the launcher)

i will give my noob 0 knowledge of typescript a day+ to proof it's really improved and im not just lucky.

im not sure but i think the negative side effect of the try statements is that i trick some useful get state until then sleep statements into not sleeping and just trying to preform the action without waiting. (could be added in the finally / catch part though)

You can try it, no warranty nor statement that it will fix the issue for you. So far working for me. As stated I did a system upgrade so maybe the issue was caused by dependencies and the issue being solve can have nothing to do with my patch.

I ended up disabling the extension.

But it all makes sense to have to do with typing speed, I did some tests, and when typing the name of an app and pressing enter quickly, it crashes. Now typing slowly works fine. But I still have the shell disabled.
