I think a number of people actually do rely on the current behavior for multi-emoji art indeed. Although I don't know if this is a showstopper.

This will break custom emoji that are intended to be seamlessly adjacent, such as

[neonpixii]

as others have said, this breaks a lot of both emoji art, AND highly beloved custom emoji, and it should really not be added.

additionally it just kind of looks ugly and awkward to me but that's subjective

as a user who enjoys custom emoji, i strongly advise against introducing a small but significant breaking change like this into mastodon- it will make the sight worse and less fun for everyone
