Screen Blank / Sleep

Open arrmo opened this issue 8 years ago • 7 comments

Hi,

When connected to HDMI ... it would be nice if the phone screen could go dark, without also sleeping the screen on the monitor (HDMI).

Thanks!

This would mostly be beneficial to avoid further (unnecessary heating) of the device. I have to wonder though; won't the OS automatically limit resources when the screen is off?

Not sure about the OS, need to confirm - but it's a pain to force the screen to stay on all the time, so that it doesn't blank out the HDMI display all the time.

Thanks!

If you connect your SlimPort cable to power with the extra USB power port then Maru will put the phone in Daydream mode, so you can continue working on the desktop while the phone runs a clock "screensaver". This is recommended too since powering both displays and running both environments eats up battery pretty quickly. But I agree that there should be a better experience here in case you don't have access to power.

@skreborn is right on the OS limiting resources: Android will, by default, put the device in a low power state when the phone display sleeps. This makes sense for standard Android, but Maru is fundamentally changing the assumption that the phone display state is one-to-one with the device power state since we now have two independent environments. De-coupling the two will involve a decent amount of work and needs to be properly tested to make sure there aren't unintended power consequences when using your phone normally.

It may be possible to put in a quick patch to get this to quickly work in the limited case where you are connected to HDMI but I don't think I'll be getting to it for a while. I opened up a feature request for an "experimental" area to drop similar workarounds and alpha features, see #10.

Hi,

Yep, I'm connecting as you say - SlimPort cable with extra USB power ... but in that case, my phone and HDMI screen are both sleeping quite soon.

Thanks!

@arrmo There is an option in Developer, labeled Stay awake that allows you to keep the screen on while charging. Is that checked for you? It should prevent it from going to sleep.

@armo Really? That's strange... Can you check Settings > Display > Daydream and confirm that "Clock" is selected and "When to daydream" (in the upper-right menu overflow) is set to "Either"? This should work out of the box.

Checked - Clock was not selected. Once I selected it ... then all worked, thanks!

FYI, have found another issue - will post separately though.
