Turning the discover page when no search query is entered into a app listing with filters for most popular apps, new apps (or whatever filter the package managers allow / people want) instaid of just having a search bar duplicated.
Describe how this new feature could help users
Would make it easier for people to discover new apps or finding the most commonly used apps (browsers, text editors or whatever).
What further study is needed here?
I'm guessing it's about where to get the statistics etc. on which to base the suggested packages?
From a quick bit of research, it looks like almost all package managers/repositories have various ways to achieve this, with the big exception being WinGet.
Supposedly the WinGet team has some privacy concerns regarding those stats, but I don't understand why. 🤷♂️
This is why the study. Implementing this is not straight-forward, since some questions arise:
- Which statistics will have more weight?
- How to get WinGet stats?
- Perhaps implement the own statistics system?
