I've been told that we will not be implementing this, but I'll track the issue here for discussion and closure.

I thought #314 covered a variety of issues (of which this is just one), so this issue was meant to pull that out individually. (#314 also touched on what "date" means.) If we keep the other issue open instead, it should get a milestone assigned.
