Wrong Frequency Displayed in Messages Tables
Thank you for the wonderful plugin, Marc. I have used it to successfully decode messages in both the 433 and 915 MHz bands.
However, when decoding messages in the 915 MHz band, all of the various Messages tables generated display frequencies between 433 and 435 MHz. There are multiple 'smart' electric meters in my neighborhood that all operate in the 915 MHz band, and each type generates its own unique Messages Table, but each table lists frequencies in the 433-435 MHz range. SDRSharp indicates the RTL-SDR receiver is indeed tuned to 915 MHz, and the FCC-ID specifications of these Itron electric meters list an operating frequency between 909.6 and 921.8 MHz.
Is there possibly an issue with how the plugin extracts the actual frequency of the ISM signal being received? Thanks again for the great plugin.
Ken -- WBØOCV
Hello
Thank you for your message,
I do not receive a signal at 768 or 915Mhz to check the frequency.
It should be possible to check with rtl_433 on the command line, as a reminder I wrote the plugin sdrSharp and modified rtl433 which existed in console mode without normally modifying its treatments(https://github.com/merbanan/rtl_433/).
If you want, you can send me a capture .cu8 file as an attachment in a .zip file.
to generate this file from the rtl433 plugin: -in the list of devices select the one you receive with a frequency error. -select Show Select. -select -SKnown. -wait to receive a message, the .cu8 files will be in the same place as RTL_433.dll
-put 2 or 3 .cu8 in the .zip file.
Marc
Have you tried to set 915Mhz to loading sdrsharp and not after another frequency in case there is a variable change problem?
Thank you for the reply Marc. Please find attached a ZIP file which includes three .cu8 files, the two Messages Tables, and an FCC letter listing the operating frequency of the device. The Itron electric meter on my house operates in the 915 MHz ISM band, and generates both IDM and NetIDM protocols, hence the two separate messages tables. There is a second ZIP file containing a screenshot of the SDRSharp operating window. As mentioned in the entry on the GitHub page, even though the SDR is tuned to 915 MHz, the messages table list frequencies of 433-434 MHz. I found it interesting that the .cu8 files contain “~…433.92M…~” as part of the saved file name. Does this perhaps indicate that the system is ‘assuming’ an operating frequency of 433.92 MHz, rather than an actual operating frequency of 915 MHz? Another interesting thing I discovered is that frequencies listed in the messages tables appear to be ‘calculated’ from the offset of the transmitter frequency from the RTL-SDR frequency. For example, my outdoor temperature sensor transmits on a frequency of 433.9227 MHz. If the center frequency of the RTL-SDR is set at 433.92 MHz (default), this represents a frequency offset of +0.0027 MHz, and the message table indicates a frequency of ‘433.9 MHz’. However, if I manually change the SDRSharp frequency to 433.4 MHz, the offset is now (433.9227 – 433.4) = +0.5227 MHZ, and the reported frequency in the messages table shows a frequency of 434.4 MHz (= +0.5227 + 433.92). Likewise, if the frequency in SDRSharp is set to 434.4 MHz, the offset is now (433.9227 – 434.4) = -0.4773 MHz, and the messages table displays a frequency of 433.4 MHz (= -0.4773 + 433.92). In neither case did the temperature sensor transmit frequency change. It appears the frequency displayed in the message table is the offset frequency added to an *assumed* center frequency of 433.92 MHz, rather than the actual center frequency to which the RTL-SDR is tuned. I hope these observations assist in your diagnosis. Please let me know if you want me to provide any additional files or information. Have a great day. Problème de fichier zip ?
Hi Marc, Yes, I have. In addition to selecting the 915 MHz option from the plugin and verifying that it actually forces a reset of the SDRSharp center frequency to 915 MHz, I have also selected the ‘Free’ frequency option and manually set the SDRSharp frequency to 915 MHz. I’ve also tried disabling the plugin, exiting the plugin, and exiting SDRSharp, and then restarting SDRSharp, launching the plugin, enabling the plugin with its saved configuration of 915 MHz, and starting it. Message Tables still indicate frequencies of ~433 MHz. I sent you a couple of ZIP files and additional observations in an earlier email. Hi Marc, I’ll ZIP the various files into separate smaller ZIP files and email them in separate emails. On another not, I tried running the Windows version of rtl_433 and saving the .cu8 file. In this case, the .cu8 file includes a “~…915M…~” in the file name, as opposed to the ~433.92M~ in the file name. This is different than the .cu8 flies created by the SDRSharp plugin. Windows-rtl_433 cu8 file
same problem, normally the name of the zip file is displayed with the message. I think I have a lead with the information you sent me.

I don't know what's going on with your zip files. I will send you a modification if you will check
Thanks Marc. I’ll run some tests with the dll you sent. I’m not sure why the ZIP files won’t open for you. A few years ago I migrated from WinZip to 7-Zip. I’ve never had any problems opening any Zip files with 7-Zip, or saving them for that matter. However, I’ve only used 7-Zip to re-open and Zip files I’ve created with 7-Zip. I’ll try reinstalling WinZip and use that to Zip the files and send them to you. Meanwhile, I’ll try sending individual unzipped files. The largest is ~390K, so they should come through email ok. I’ll let you know how the modified dll works. Here’s the cu8 file created from the Windows version 21.12 of rtl_433
Here is #1 of 3 of the cu8 files created by the original version of the rtl_433 plugin from the run earlier this morning that corresponds to the Messages Tables sent earlier.
Plugin cu8 #2 of 3
Plugin cu8 #3 of 3
Hi Marc, I just tried running SDRSharp with the modified dll you had sent. It doesn’t work with my current Version 1860 SDRSharp, whereas the ‘original’ dll had no problems, other than the frequency glitch. When I select the modified RTL_433 plugin, enable it, and click ‘start’, it appears to launch, it momentarily opens and displays a verbose window, and then SDRSharp immediately exits. I even tried running SDRSharp in a folder in which there are no other plugins loaded (i.e., only the rtl_433 plugin exists) to eliminate the possibility of a plugin conflict. Still won’t run. One thing I noticed before SDRSharp exits is that the center frequency does *not* reset to the frequency selected in the plugin. I would imagine an error dump is created somewhere when SDRSharp exits, but I haven’t been able to find it. I’ll keep looking. Thanks again -- Ken From: marco402Sent: Saturday, June 25, 2022 10:14 AMTo: marco402/plugin-Rtl433-for-SdrSharpCc: WB0OCV; AuthorSubject: Re: [marco402/plugin-Rtl433-for-SdrSharp] Wrong Frequency Displayed in Messages Tables (Issue #4) I don't know what's going on with your zip files.I will send you a modification if you will check
Hi Ken sorry, we had to reload the 3 dlls, I had changes in progress, I didn't retest everything...
Good test
Marc
Hi Marc, I tested the modified set of dlls this morning and they work perfectly. The messages tables now display the correct frequencies according to the ISM band being received. In addition, the frequencies displayed in the messages tables no longer change when one manually shifts the center frequency of the SDR receiver in SDRSharp. A job well done! Thanks for such a quick response to my questions. I guess you can consider Issue #4 as being successfully addressed and closed. Thanks again. Have a fantastic day.
