Window restore of "minimized to tray" does not work (Ubuntu)

After enabling "minimize to tray" the window disappears as tray-icon but it's not possible to restore it. I'm using Ubuntu 20 with unity-desktop (variant of "gnome" like desktop environment).

Is driving me nuts as well! On Manjaro here, i think the problem relates to HAVING to run GUI app as root, to be able to access the daemon.
