Splotchy text with certain fonts

It appears that two fonts, possibly more, are incorrectly converted, resulting in a splotchy appearance. The first font I tried, Eczar Bold, is unusably bad:

The second font I tried, Inknut Antiqua, is much better, but suffers on thin lines, such as the horizontal areas on 'a' and 'e':

How to reproduce

1. Download TTF for Eczar and/or Inknut Antiqua from Google Fonts
2. Convert using https://maplibre.org/font-maker

The issue with thin lines might be due to the signed-distance field method.
