Keyboard navigation : select middle emote with down arrow key

Open cmalard opened this issue 6 years ago • 8 comments

I'm surprised each time it happens:

  • write some text to only have some emotes
  • press down arrow button
  • the selector goes to an empty space screen

Suggestion : select the emote at the middle, would be awesome and super useful ! :-D

ah...

It feels especially disappointing when you intentionally type in such search query that it will filter out all emojis except a single one, but when you press the down key, it doesn't get selected 🤦, so you have to make several extra key pressings in order to get it done, e.g.: screenshot from 2018-12-14 22-46-27

My belief is that if that list is sorted in the order of descending relevance (e.g. the most recently used emojis are displayed in the most left positions), the selection should also start from the most relevant ones, i.e. from left, so that when one presses the down key, the left emoji gets selected. (Why to start selection from less relevant items at all?)

Translation of my answer in french:

it was designed to be navigated with tab, up and down arrows having a behavior is just a side effect

Mostly, I did understand the French comment, but only now I actually get that I shouldn't use the down key at all. Indeed, when I press tab, the leftmost emoji gets selected! -- That wasn't stated explicitly in the original French comment, that's why I didn't realized that.

btw, tab is much more handy than down key! 👍

Even if it is a side-effect, why not make the down key go to the first item for users who expect that to be the behaviour?

If you're motivated to override the way the focus management works in GNOME Shell menus, you can contribute
