fixed errors when using with 1.3.3

We should probably have a different branch for 1.2.x vs. 1.3.x vs 2.0.x. @dregad what do you think?

Probably makes sense as I have not tested yet if the changes are working in 1.2 too. Based on changes it is possible to support 1.2 and 1.3 at the same time if the current version is available in the environment
