How about a better error message? Instead of `User exists: user-10 (id=NNNM)` Something like `User exists but isn't in the requested group, run "user joingroup ... " to add them...

If it was essential isn't it overriding it in a potentially unsafe way? Forcing `default` allows a table to be opened multiple times even on versions of libhdf that don't...

Attempting to install tables 3.2 on Travis fails

Is this still a problem with the latest main branch? I suspect it might be a Docker bug rather than anything in r2d.

I think of repo2docker as incorporating best practice rather than defining it. Admittedly this is quite vague since we don't have a formal process for adding new formats to repo2docker.
