Feedback when building a vessel that exceeds VAB capability

Open liamdennehy opened this issue 9 years ago • 2 comments

When sending a vessel to the build queue which exceeds the parts limit of the VAB (and presumably SPH) the operation generates text, but is often hidden under other windows. Even worse when a vessel under construction being edited - all progress is lost.

This is due to bad user behaviour granted - I should be checking to see if a warning is generated before exiting the VAB/SPH, but even then it is in light-green text sometimes on the sky so not easily visible. A warning on the build/simulate dialog would be much more useful, especially if highlighted in a warning colour. Simply seeing the window disappear may be taken by others as confirmation that operation succeeded.

Thanks for all the hard work.

I have actually fixed the bug that causes progress to be lost in the development builds, which should help alleviate this issue. I'm not sure if I can change the color of the text that is displayed, as the function used to display it is provided by KSP. I could have a window pop up instead however.

I meant a warning in the dialog you provide, perhaps above/below the "Save Edits/Cancel Edits" buttons, or even disabling the "Save Edits" command if it would not queue with the changes made with some explanation (if possible). I hope KSP provides a function to test whether a vessel can build/launch.

Of course, by the time the vessel is built a Launchpad upgrade may be in place, so users may choose to ignore the weight warning and build anyway (for mass limits on launch, not parts in VAB), but then if KSP doesn't enforce the limit on launch another warning in the VAB/SPH status windows at KSC view would be needed. This is getting complex...
