Card: Cauldron Haze
Hello! I'm trying to cast Cauldron Haze to give persist to the 8 creatures I have on my board.
"Choose any number of target creatures. Each of those creatures gains persist until end of turn."
However, when selecting the creatures, it stops right after I select the 4th creature, and asks to pay the mana cost. No matter what I try, It won't let me select more than 4 creatures.
Strangely enough, now I'm trying to cast this same spell, and it allows me to select up to 6 creatures instead (I have 9 creatures on my board).
6 of 9 - make sure left creatures don’t have any protection. Card’s code is simple and fine - there is nothing to bugging.
Hey... there wasn't protection/shroud involved. From those 9 creatures, I tried once from first to last (it stopped at the 6th), then cancelled and tried again from last to first, also stopped at the 6th. It let me select any of the 9 creatures, it just stopped at the 6th. I will try to find out what might be happening, and post back here with more information.
You must look at the yellow highlighting during selection — it shows you the possible targets. If you select all possible targets, it will finish automatically by design (e.g., the game thinks that you have chosen all 6 of the 6 possible targets). To help find the buggy use case, take a screenshot before starting the selection, after the first selection, and after the last one.
Here all the possible targets for Cauldron Haze:
As soon as I hit the 4th target, it asks for mana payment:
It doesn't matter which creatures I select:
All creatures have the yellow border and are in fact targetable, as expected. There are no creatures with protection, shroud, or any effect that would make them immune to the spell. Even if that were the case, I would expect those immune creatures to not have the yellow border and just be unselectable. On this same turn, just before trying to cast Cauldron Haze, I cast Karlov of the Ghost Council (shown with summoning sickness on my board). It triggered Ardbert (giving 2 +1/+1 counters plus menace and vigilance to both Elas Il-Kor and Ardbert), but just that. I'm pretty sure it doesn't make any difference, because I just passed my turn, and tried to cast Cauldron Haze again during next player's upkeep. Same thing - all yellow borders, stops selecting after 4th creature. I'm not sure if this might have something to do with playing versus AIs. I've seen strange behaviors in the long past when playing against AIs. I hope this helps. I can try to make anything specific you need me to help. I can also give you the decks I'm using (Ardbert for me, Jhoira for the 3 opponents).
I'm not sure if this might be related, but I just noticed the same behavior when trying to cast Clever Concealment, which allows to target any number of nonland permanents I control. They all show yellow, but after selecting a number of them, it goes straight to mana payment. Not even sure if I should comment here, or just open another issue. Commented here because it seems to be the same error in another card.
I can't reproduce it with diff players, ranges or AIs. So something weird here (as example: some badly writing card can change the static filter and ruin all games in whole server). Please upload all used decks.
Sure. here they go. I've been playing commander, as Ardbert. I chose to play against 3 of these Jhoiras because they are a bit easier to manage, since I don't have tutors on the deck, and so, need to wait to draw Cauldron Haze. I get the unexpected behavior every single time, though. I haven't checked if the number of creatures I can target before it asks for mana payment depends on the number of creatures on the board, since it stopped after the 4th, and then after the 6th on different games.
