Description

When running Connect-Maester I sometimes see the following error:

I'm not seeing this on macOS. Could this be the MSAL issue when EXO and Graph cmdlet versions mismatch.

Shoot, it's actually affecting my EXO and IPPSSession connections. Any idea what combination of modules works or which ones actually create the conflict?

This is something with the latest EXO PowerShell module. I have the same issue on two different Windows machines, not with Maester, but with just connecting to EXO directly. So when Maester is trying to connect to EXO (as you saw @SamErde) it's generating this error. Seen some people were able to fix it by downgrading their EXO PS Module...hopefully Microsoft will come out with an updated EXO module that has this fixed...

I downgraded to EXO Module 3.5.1 (https://www.oneidentity.com/community/identity-manager/f/forum/38763/connecting-to-exchange-online-throws-error-during-sync-project-configuration-1im-v9-2) and the issue went away. @merill - does Maester always try to grab the latest? Or would it leave 3.5.1 alone until we manually update to a fixed version of the EXO module in the future?

P.S. I did try changing the order I loaded modules similar to that article from a couple years ago from Tony but didn't seem to help

@SamErde also looks like 3.7.1 for ExchangeOnlineManagement works. When I went from 3.7.1 to 3.7.2 it started failing. Looks like it's still broken in 3.8.0-Preview1 & Preview2

I have not yet, and experienced a new variation of the issue that I am checking to see if it can be reproduced consistently: the order of importing modules can help, [depending on which versions are installed(?)]. I noticed yesterday that sometimes the Connect-MicrosoftTeams cmdlet was missing from the imported functions entirely. However, if I imported the Teams module and connected to Teams first, it succeeded and allowed others to still connect.

...but I definitely do not have a reliable combination of module versions yet!

I experience the same issue when ExchangeOnlineManagement 3.7.2 is installed. Downgrading to 3.7.1 fixed this error. I also however experience issue #875

🤯 What am I missing? I see that you said an error is expected with the dummy credential ('Password cannot be empty in UsernamePassword flow') but how does this facilitate the actual connection? My workaround has been to use an actual UPN and deal with the authentication prompt.

@SamErde v1.3.0. After I posted I dug more into it and I see the issue with EXO module. I haven’t downgraded versions yet but I find that if I connect to EXO first using connect-exchangeonlinemanagement , the connect-maester doesn’t error.

Connecting to Exchange Online first is usually a good workaround. If you are able to update Maester to the latest prwview version, there is a function in place now that pretty reliably handles that for you.

THe new preview version worked. I found that connecting to EXO first sometimes worked, other times it didn't. (Although I have only tested the new version once so far).

Just adding this as a reference as these WAM changes to the underlying modules come up often enough that an interactive work around can be nice for validating with. This would STILL have the DLL conflicts that @SamErde resolved with his PR, but would allow controlling which DLL you call through.
