Can you please specify how to reproduce this? Otherwise I can't fix it
I just installed this and I am seeing the same thing. I have visual studio community installed and I opened my top level .gitignore file and VS just goes crazy making it next to impossible to edit the file. I get a random blank dialog showing up. I think it is trying to read the files at the path that is specified but since the path starts with /, I think it is looking at the root of the hard drive and not finding the path. because I am getting it highlighting all my files as not there.
I can't even scroll the file without VS going nuts. It seems to eventual settle down once I leave it for 5-10 minutes. Is it building up some data structure in the back ground on first load?
Here is my .gitignore file:

I have that issue with VS 2017 Professional.
When I opened my repository's .gitignore file (Team Explorer -> Repository Settings -> 'Edit'), VS hung for several minutes (including the dreaded message in the title bar) and only at the end of that, the syntax highlighting (gray color for rules that don't match) was shown. During that time, my two CPU cores were maxed out.
Now each time I hover over a non-grayed-out entry, VS blocks again and consumes my CPU.
My project is an ASP.NET Core server application and an rather large angular 4 SPA.
I can see similar issues when editing TypeScript files and VS tries to "help" with import statements and a file selection dialog, maybe that's related. I tried to report that through VS' feedback option and could do that for this problem as well. Is there a way this gets triaged to you @madskristensen?
@madskristensen Same issue here with VS 2017 Enterprise edition (update 15.6.6) and v.1.2.71 of the plugin installed. I can't edit the .gitignore file as VS hangs and consumes a lot of CPU.
Any update on this ?
