I've already discovered this snag, https://github.com/googlefonts/gftools/issues/432#issuecomment-952020337. I outline a possible solution in the next comment. This will keep the compatibility but we need to do this in ufo2ft.

Atm, I'm thinking just the binaries. Personally, I find the builder is simply adding features that don't exist in the source formats yet so we shouldn't tamper with existing sources.

This is just a thought, not something we should necessarily implement.
