Vertical Tabs in Edge browser

Open activebiz1 opened this issue 5 years ago • 3 comments

Hi, am new with using the Edge Browser [latest version]. Normally used Mozilla FF, v. 75.0 and am finally switching away from Firefox. Every time they update, something else is thrown off, taking hours of my time to fix. I never thought I'd say that but that newest Edge browser grows on me by now. The only thing I need now are the perfect vertical tabs. Your extension fits my wish 100%. But for the life of me, I cannot figure how I get it in a sidebar? I have the icon on the top tool bar, can toggle it - but it never shows in a sidebar. I did install various different 'sidebars' - but none opens your tabs in it. Just their own stuff. So, I uninstalled them. Is there a trick to open your tabs vertically in a sidebar or does it require a specific sidebar?

I truly appreciate your help. I work on a PC and the ctrl+E does not work, is just opens a webpage: Bing Search.

Regards, Michele Krammer

I just found an article where it explains that Edge has its own sidebar [that is NOT sizable] and stays under the Vertical Tabs sidebar. I did get it open but I still don't know the trick how to "keep it open". The selection "NO" is not obeying my order - LOL

Hi Michele,

First off, thanks so much for your interest in Vertical Tabs!

Regarding your sidebar situation, I'm guessing you're referring to the sidebar in FF where you can access bookmarks, history, and ofc, the Tree Style Tabs extension. This is one of the reasons that I love FF so much.

Unfortunately, the sidebar is not a native UI in either MS Edge or Chrome at the moment. Therefore, the extension that I created is only mimicking it by injecting some code that constructs the vertical tabs panel into all the webpages that you're viewing using javascript. The vertical tabs panel is, therefore, a part of the webpage that you're viewing and not a native browser UI. However, there's some good news in the coming months: Microsoft's new Edge browser will get vertical tabs soon I think their implementation will promote the vertical tabs as a native browser UI.

Regarding how to bind another set of shortcut/hotkeys to activate the extension:

  • Open a new tab and go to edge://extensions/
  • Click Keyboard Shortcuts on the left
  • Find Vertical Tabs and change the key binding there

Hope this helps and does not confuse you more :-)

And thanks again for trying Vertical Tabs out! It's your enthusiasm that motivates me to keep pushing forward this open-source project!

Hi. Thanks for this extension. It is a great concept, however there are some issues in my Edge browser. It works for a few minutes and then it just disappears. Clicking on the symbol brings the "eyes" but not the tabs on the left or anywhere else on the screen. At some stage, it appears again. I wish it was more reliable.
