The adapter will associate as a 802.11a device on the 5 GHz band and as a 802.11bg device on the 2.4 GHz band. How do I get activate 802.11n modulation?

It will use 802.11n rates if your connection with the AP allows it, but it likely reports 802.11bg even when it is running at 802.11n rates. First of all, you MUST use WPA2-CCMP (AES) encryption. Using any other form of encryption will disable the n rates.
