Smooth mode?

I'm sure you've noticed many youtube channels that upload music and have a spectrum in the video. In these videos, it's very smooth and easy to see which frequencies have active parts (for example, you can see every base kick and tell the beat and when large chords land).

Is it possible to create a smoothing mode that would make the bars move smoother? I suppose one way to impliment it is like foobar2000, where each bar floats down after being pushed up. Is this even possible in real time? I know the videos might be taking advantage of being able to look ahead in the song to render it smoothly.
