Not possible to zoom large images reliably on mobile

I have many large images that are of course shrinked to fit screen when i tap them to preview. When entering full screen though, i would expect it to be possible to pinch to zoom.

It looks like full screen just creates an overlay, so I'm actually just zooming the web page, which makes it very unreliable/hard.

I guess one solution to this problem would be to simply let the "full screen" button go to the direct target URL of the image.
