[DISCUSSION] Fake websites

Open fedorissimo opened this issue 11 months ago • 7 comments

There are a lot of websites positioning themselves as official ones, such as https://arnis.cc/ or https://arnis.app/
One of them is even the first search result on Yandex. However, the github page is not there at all

Both sites have links to github

Hi there! Thanks for pointing that out - all websites pretending to be associated with Arnis are fake. This Github page is the only official page. I don't know what software they are distributing, but please avoid them. Regarding the top search results - to be honest I don't know how to fix that. Maybe it would help if we all report the fake sites?

Thanks a lot for letting me know! If anyone has any idea, let me know.

With a license switch in https://github.com/louis-e/arnis/pull/230#issue-2772829385 I attempt to take a first step against such fake websites. Additionally I already contacted each of them with a cease and desist request.

I have now issued a DMCA Takedown for two fake websites. Let's see what happens! :)

Seems like arnis.cc is down. arnis.app, however, is still up

I searched "arnis mc" using google. arnis.cc was still at the top. "arnis minecraft", though, shows the github repo. If the arnis.cc scammers had built a better-looking website, I easily could've fallen for it.

https://arnis.cc/ seems to be more like fan website, beacuse it uses offical download links. Something similar to https://ublockorigin.com/ for Ublock origin.
