[FR] Low data mode

Open NoctuaMico opened this issue 1 year ago • 1 comments

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. I am experiencing high mobile data usage when using the app. This often results in me running out of mobile data or incurring additional charges.

Describe the solution you'd like I would like a "Low Data Mode" feature to be implemented. Ideas for this mode:

  • Poll for updates less frequently.
  • Not autoload images or videos.
  • Compress any data that can be compressed before it's sent or received.
  • Provide an option to view images and videos in a lower resolution.
  • Cache frequently accessed content to reduce the need for re-downloading.
  • Optionally, as seen in other clients, it should be able to cache often-used content on WiFi, so it can be read when out and about.

Additional context Given the increasing cost and limitations of mobile data plans, it's essential for apps to be data-efficient. A low data mode would be beneficial for users like myself who rely heavily on mobile data.

It's been a while since this suggestion was created, but I also would like to report quite high mobile data usage with Winston.

In using the app for about 30 seconds, it used over 100mb of data and all I did was quickly scroll maybe 10-15 posts and check my inbox / notifications.

I love using Winston but I've had to switch off its access to mobile data, as when I had it on, I was exceeding my data plan every month. Now that I've reverted to using the reddit website, I would say I'm using about half as much mobile data per month than I was with winston 😢
