Document (and implement?) modern manual install procedure

Could the install procedure from source (with pip install <dir/GitHub URL> instead of python setup.py install) be used for this project (the Python 2 compatibility may be an obstacle)? If yes, it would be nice to use it, so as to follow modern usage.
