Debian & Ubuntu Repo no longer exists?

Open eKKiM1 opened this issue 2 years ago • 11 comments

Hi,

When following the installation guidelines on Debian & Ubuntu on https://lizardfs-docs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/adminguide/installation.html or https://dev.lizardfs.com/docs/adminguide/installation.html#get-and-install-debian

There is an issue adding the repo. There is no valid certificate for the given URL and the packages seems to be missing.

The packages are now in the main Ubuntu/Debian repo's. The instructions are out-of-date.

Not for much longer as I've requested removal of LizardFS packages from Debian "unstable"...

That's disappointing...

I've requested removal of LizardFS packages from Debian "unstable"...

Any particular reason for that?

The instructions are going to be updated at #924. In the meantime, I included the relevant part of the draft.

There are currently lizardfs packages in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Debian 10; but not in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or Debian 11.

Too many reasons. FTBFS, unmaintained/abandoned upstream, etc. Well-maintained alternative (moosefs) is available. There was no option to keep the packages that could not be built any more. And what for? New release remains broken for years, with horrendous EC bug that ate tibibites of my data... Old release can't be fixed... Debian is not meant to be a cemetery for broken unmaintained software hence the removal. (Last but not least, I no longer wish to maintain LizardFS in Debian and nobody else was interested to step in for help.) I cared a lot about LizardFS (I reported nearly quarter of all issues here) but I have no capacity to take over the development. Not that even trying to do that would be wise, given current shape of MooseFS, IMHO.

Hi,

I have my home storage based on LizardFS. I use the last stable version which is 3.12. After years of usage, the world moved forward and version 3.12 does not even build on modern Linux.

Instead of looking for a replacement (MooseFS), I modified the old version to build again. I brought changes around Python sources from master branch into the 3.12 code base.

My changes are on jakubciepiela/lizardfs branch 3.12-debian12

Thanks for that 👍

I need to connect to an old lizardfs cluster from a new PC. What exactly are the install instructions currently? According to https://github.com/lizardfs/lizardfs/issues/924 the repo is down.

Hi,

I've installed the LizardFS deb packages from Ubuntu 20.04 into Ubuntu 22.04 without any issues. You can download the deb's from: https://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=default&section=all&arch=any&keywords=lizardfs&searchon=names If you just need the LizardFS client download: https://packages.ubuntu.com/focal/lizardfs-client

Install the packages using "gdebi" or "dpkg".

HTH, Tony.
