Capability check failed / incompatible capabilities

Describe the bug

I received the following error on a split O/T setup that didn't have a T connected at the time. I figured the cause was due to not having a T available. Since then other at least one other O has reported this error caused their T to crash. https://discord.com/channels/423160867534929930/429350403272998913/984564938536275979. I can understand if a T isn't available receiving a capability check failure but I wouldn't expect this to result in crashing a T.
