Alternatively, if you're building your own kernel, you may as well make virtio-net built-in.

Can you try using the latest head? I think that's fixed in 82ac114b8aba9a4264925335f93a7f1069c86196. That commit is not in v41.

I misread `git describe` output. The said commit is there in v41. Can you provide the script in the guest as well?
