fontconfig vs. git?

fonts get broken occasionally, leading to effects like this: http://i.snag.gy/C0Y94.jpg

@local-girl's hypothesis is that fontconfig needs to be run on master again because some of the generated font data has been corrupted by the merge. so a quick fix for this would be to follow the instructions in the aula README.md to re-run fontconfig on the offending system.

could use some more investigating.
