Adding video to Startsite on Ypart and general video features
As a part of the tasked new drafting of Ypart it was collectively decided to try and replace tutorials with instructional videos that will also have accompanying descriptive text... Furthermore, the bild/photo on the start site is to be replaced with an introductory video.
In general, what is the best solution to add video to Ypart? Should we be imbedding video in the HTML through Kotti which is hosted elsewhere? (Vimeo, youtube, dailymotion) Should we self-host videos? (I think not)
Lastly, is it possible to edit/add tool-tips through kotti? We had the idea of linking and perhaps even playing videos for specific features/concepts through tool-tips which would be activated through a help/hilfe button (similar to how one now turns on and off tutorials). This button could or should be on many pages to quickly help link users to specific information or tutorials.
A more detailed explanation is so.
- User is confused at what to do on a group page.
- User clicks a help button in an obvious location on the page.
- This enables more detailed tool-tips which display .onhover.
- Within some of these tool-tip boxes/windows, perhaps, the relevant instructional video would play.
Thank you for any response. -The Interns
I guess this are three separate parts:
- [x] make the startpage editable through kotti
- [ ] Define a workflow for embedding of video (with a11y in mind)
- [ ] Rethink tutorials (afaik they have not been maintained for some time and we also decided some time ago to change how they work, see #162)
I am not so sure about using tooltips as a replacement for tutorials. Maybe we have a different understanding of the term "tooltip". I think tooltips should be visible when hovering over an element while tutorials are permanent overlays.
Agreed with all your points.
Concerning the difference between tutorials and tool tips I also agree. Our plan is to have the tutorials on a dedicated page (instead of being an optional UI element) in the form of videos with descriptive text (for those that cannot or choose not to view the videos). Then tools tips, when hovered upon, either have small descriptive texts, as they always have had,...or in the case of more complex objects, they will reference the tutorials with a link or a direct playing of the tutorial video within the tooltip window.
tooltips are genrally not intended to contain anything other than text as they are
- only visible when hovering over an object
- generated from the
titleattribute (which also provides a fallback if javascript fails)
