Validate and update the guide. Based on the comments in DisQus:

Is step 9 wrong? i believe it should point to /var/www/html, not /usr/share/webapps

Add the following crontab entry to the bottom of the file.

* * * * * /usr/bin/php /usr/share/webapps/pixelfed/artisan schedule:run >> /dev/null 2>&1

also after finishing the guide, the page loads with the following error and none of the links work
