Lens refactor

As noted in #1143, the relational lens subsystem could be refactored or merged into the core Links code, avoiding a number of complications.

Ah, I had forgotten that bullet point. I'm actually inclined to remove that and keep this issue as a reminder since the other things are either minor or speculative, whereas this seems moderately high priority for maintainability.
