Vote for system auto-draw on threefold

Open dlbbld opened this issue 2 years ago • 1 comments

The rules for online chess released by FIDE not so long ago require auto-draw on threefold and fifty-moves.

Not because FIDE says so, but because I think it is taking the full possibilities of online chess into account, I suggest evaluating it. As a result, Lichess also becomes leaner and more transparent.

Auto-draw playing on the board is not possible for practical reasons. Therefore the players must claim it. Given the constant problems with this rule from the beginning to today (players not knowing how to claim, wrong claims, and counts). If the auto-draw playing on board were possible, that would be the best way. Now that online chess allows this, it is only an evolution of chess to use this possibility.

It would make the system leaner, for the below is no longer needed:

  • The user setting for auto-draw on threefold
  • Claiming the threefold regarding threefold on the board
  • Claiming the threefold regarding the next move
  • The auto-draw on fivefold

It would make the system more transparent by removing the below discrepancies. Before, FIDE rules only existed for OTB games.

  • The discrepancy (historically evolved) between the claim for threefold on the board and the own move.
  • The discrepancy of not giving time penalties for wrong threefold claims where the FIDE OTB rules require them.
  • The discrepancy between fifty-moves behavior (system auto-draw) and threefold behavior (user claim or auto-draw depending on user settings).

And to the king @Ornicar, please do not close the issue without giving it a second glance. The issue is worth a second glance.
