Moving piece nearly impossible when taking large amounts of material (Android)

Open lustremedia opened this issue 2 years ago • 9 comments

Describe the bug Playing 1 min fast games if you have taken an almost all pieces from the opponent, then all of a sudden dragging pieces is harder, you have to double tap or tripple tap pieces to get focus. It may have to do with the amount of pawns taken in the game cause.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Play a game
  2. Take as much material as possible +12 or more and most material being pawns
  3. Focus of pieces slows down no more drag or premove is possible Board seems to be frozen but tapping multiple times on a piece will be able to select the piece but then the landing needs to also be selected

Expected behavior Games should be fast and fluid piece movement until the end of a game should be garanteed

Smartphone (please complete the following information):

  • I am on the Android Plattform, currently on a Samsung

Additional context Look for one sided Games where Movetimes in the last 3rd are going way up

I believe I experienced this bug just now and drew a game because of it. I had a knight and managed to queen a pawn, and my opponent had a bare king, so 28 pieces had been captured in total. Two of the times when I clicked on my king to move it, the game froze mid-animation before even rendering the available squares, showing only some shading around my king. I had to navigate away from the game and reload it, causing me to eventually time out, three trivial moves shy of delivering checkmate. The other player appeared to experience the bug as well, because they took nearly a minute in a blitz game to make a series of forced moves (or they were simply stalling because they knew they had lost).

@lustremedia @Kurt-von-Laven , does #2178 look similar to your issue? Specifically, did the board location change as you captured more material?

No, the board didn't change location.

@jas14 Hi Joe, yes this is the issue, but without the game ever skewing in one direction or another. It is more like the pawns start to drop down and disappear. The screeshots certainly show the exact behavior I have experienced with tons of material down and the pawns just lining up vertically ...

My issue appears to be the odd one out. I did not experience the pawns lining up vertically, just the board freezing mid-animation while I was trying to move the king. Maybe we can use the other thread for their issue and this one for mine?

How often has this issue come up with you?

Only 1 or 2 games, but that was enough that I immediately stopped using Lichess until the bug is patched, so it's not clear to me how frequent the bug is.

I would say you need to create your own ticket and give more specific information, also maybe referencing the other two tickets here if the are relevant.

I'm fairly sure the underlying issue is the same, but let's keep discussion on this one limited to loss of interactivity with a large material imbalance without board displacement. Let's use #2178 for discussion about board displacement with a large material imbalance. Thank you both for clarifying!
