Linux/Vulkan: image freezes after achievements startup summary if HDR is enabled

Is there an existing issue for this?

Description

If HDR is enabled, after either the achievements' startup summary or an achievement unlock notification fades out, whichever comes first, the image will freeze while audio can still be heard and keys/hotkeys will still work.

This will not happen if at least one of these is true:

  • The game has no achievements, therefore no summary nor achievement unlock notifications are displayed;
  • Achievement notifications are turned OFF, both summary and achievement unlock;
  • Graphics widgets are turned OFF (User Interface > On-Screen Notifications > Graphics Widgets);
  • HDR is turned OFF.

Common messages on logs after image freezes:

Steps to reproduce the bug

  1. Enable achievements, providing login credentials
  2. Enable HDR (display has to support it)
  3. Make sure User Interface > On-Screen Notifications > Graphics Widgets is set to ON (default value)
  4. Load a game with achievements
  5. Wait for the startup summary to show and fade out
  6. Image freezes

Just found out that, even if I disable the startup summary entirely, the image will freeze the same way after an achievement unlock notification, which is visually similar to the startup summary.

I am also experiencing this on a Steam Deck OLED. Do you have HDR enabled in Retroarch video settings? If I disable HDR, I no longer have this issue.

Just tested out, confirmed, it only freezes while HDR is enabled in RetroArch settings. Disabled and the issue won't happen.

Interesting. Thanks for confirming. Hopefully this can be fixed as I prefer how HDR looks but will keep it disabled for now.

I'm having the same issue after installing Retroarch. Except I can't find any mention of HDR anywhere in the settings.

However, my retroarch.cfg file has video_hdr_enable = "false" which I assume means HDR is in fact disabled for me. Yet the image still freezes when the achievement popup fades away.

Having the same issue on Steam Deck OLED without HDR. The RetroArch version is 1.21.0 (Git 54af661d95), installed from EmuDeck. Core: PCSX-ReARMed r25l-69-g6365a75 Game: Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain I'm starting the game from ES-DE in Big Picture Mode. But the issue persists even in desktop mode directly through retroarch in windowed mode.

Happens every time I load this game but doesn't seem happen on others that I've tried. This is the only game that has achievements unlocked though. The game is loaded, the sound plays, input works but no picture. I can open the retroarch menu and navigate it, but there's no picture there as well.

The problem doesn't happen when I'm changing driver to gl OR if I disable achievements overlay. Also going into retroarch menu before the achievements overlay fades out, waiting there for a bit and returning back to the game fixes the problem.

Sometimes the same thing happens during the gameplay, I think it happened when an achievement was unlocked, when a challenge failed, etc. Overall it seems to be connected to the achievement overlay.

What I've tried:

  1. Removing everything from /thumbnails/cheevos/badges/**
  2. Resetting configuration, disabling shaders, resetting installation through EmuDeck.

Logs pastebin with the error and without error, if game is paused on the achievements overlay.

I had crashing issues related to graphics widgets even with HDR off, specifically on the Gambatte core.

With HDR on it's crashing on every single core I tried when graphics widgets are enabled.

I have a very similar issue only with HDR on, but to me it happens some 10 or 20 seconds right after I start RetroArch, just navigating the playlists games up and down. I don't even need to start a game or load a core. This happens at least on Ozone and XMB. I am on KDE Wayland, using the Vulkan driver.

When it freezes, inputs still works, as I can close RetroArch with 2x ESC key. I can also toggle fullscreen with the F key, in which case the image will unfreeze and go back to normal, until it freezes again a few seconds later.

As soon as it freezes, it starts spamming this log output:

[INFO] [Vulkan] QueuePresent failed, destroying swapchain.
[INFO] [Vulkan] Got 2 swapchain images.
[INFO] [Vulkan] QueuePresent failed, destroying swapchain.
[INFO] [Vulkan] Got 2 swapchain images.
[INFO] [Vulkan] QueuePresent failed, destroying swapchain.
[INFO] [Vulkan] Got 2 swapchain images.
[INFO] [Vulkan] QueuePresent failed, destroying swapchain.

I have compiled from source and the bug is still there.

I have noticed lately a series of loosely related bugs that all have screen freezes on Vulkan in common, all with similar outputs. I wonder if these are connected:

I have noticed that it only freezes when I'm navigating menus with game covers.

For example, when navigating up and down on a playlist with available covers on the XMB menu. And for some reason, it seems to happen more frequently when navigating the game list up, rather than down.

Yup, it still happens with latest git as well, but only with vulkan as the video output driver, not gl. As a workaround, I'm using gl as the video output driver with Zink which uses Vulkan in the end anyway, instead of relying on RetroArch's Vulkan output implementation.

Oh, interesting. I didn't realize this was an option, could you possibly tell me how you did this? I'm not familiar with Zink.

If you have Mesa installed, you have Zink available with some environment variables. I personally put this in a ~/.config/environment.d/always-zink.conf file:

# always use zink for openGL rendering (could mess with driver changes etc.; disable when testing a new gpu)
__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa
MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink
GALLIUM_DRIVER=zink

But if you just want to test instead of using Zink system-wide which could cause unexpected problems if you haven't tested it much, you can run RetroArch from the command line with those environment variables temporarily set like this:

__GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=mesa MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink GALLIUM_DRIVER=zink retroarch
