[Question]ASR: Could not restore - No space left on device

Open duke-cliff opened this issue 5 years ago • 10 comments

What could be the reason the device is running out of space, is there something we can do to free some space to continue?

Or should we wait for a smaller upgrade in the future?

Or is there anyway to use a smaller unsigned ipw?

duke-cliff avatar Apr 24 '20 13:04 duke-cliff

You're not the first to encounter such an error and it seems like that between certain iOS versions the root filesystem changed in size so much that with an update restore it can't write the full root filesystem. Only solution is to perform an erase restore but then you'll lose the user data if you don't have a backup.

Thanks! I will keep the phone as-is for now. so many important photos for our new son on that phone. Can't afford to lose all the photos. Fxck Apple!

Mark, same issue... A visit to the Genius Bar didn't help.

Same here ... guess we are all in the same boat ...

Couple of questions:

  1. Is there a way to get data off the "data" partition? Or is that no accessible while in recovery? (example ... copy the sandbox of a specific application away - or backup the data partition and restore after an erase restore?
  2. Can a different version of the OS be installed that is smaller and that would fit on the root file system? Or would that cause a data loss too?

Thanks!

Same here, the exact same questions in my mind. It sucks that there is no way to free up iPhone disk space in recovery mode. It is a design flaw that lack of disk space can brick the device.

Hello everyone, if your ASR restore process passes 90%, you may want to try the iOS 14.4 beta (18D5030e): https://www.theiphonewiki.com/wiki/Beta_Firmware/iPhone/14.x

Download the correct IPSW and run: idevicerestore your.ipsw

I'm seeing the same on 68%. Any hope?

singulart avatar Jan 23 '21 23:01 singulart

It's been a while, is there any new information on this? I brick my phone as well and I can't even do a erase restore. This should really be a bug instead of a question.
