Open street map as geo service possible?

Open godfuture opened this issue 9 years ago • 5 comments

Background I guess Google Maps is a nice serverice, but I prefer open street maps as free provider.

Idea I dont know if there is such an API for open street maps that could be integrated into this calendar app. But supposed there is, would it be possible to integrate another geo service like open street map?

:+1:

Refer to owncloud/calendar#439 as well...

:-1: And I mostly prefer google maps because of its traffic dependend routing... And now? ;)

I think OSM is more in the spirit of owncloud, while you've got a point with the traffic feature. I always tend to make things like that configurable (at least by the admin), but the owncloud core developers seem to be more of the "one size fits all" kind (when done right). So I guess it's @libasys choice in the end.

I also like opensource and use it whereever possible. And I also like the openmaps if I want to have a look, where something is geographical.. But I think, mostly you use the maps feature in calendar (and contacts) for navigation. And in this case the traffic feature is something I don't want to miss.

Maybe the proposal I made in contacts+ to make it customizeable (by admin) can be a solution: https://github.com/libasys/contactsplus/issues/65#issuecomment-137970613

I use owncloud to excape google's cobweb and using its api seems a little bit contra productive. If you need any help in research how the api of osm works, I would like to help you.
