ISSUE: LeoCAD has become very slow

Open BuilderSky opened this issue 4 years ago • 32 comments

what in the world??? when i began to use LeoCAD, it worked amazing. it was so fast and easy to use. But then, about 4 days ago i believe, LeoCAD crashed on me-luckily i saved my work-but ever since then, it has been extremely slow. What in the world?!? What do i do? I can barely use this program as it is functioning like this. I have even saved my work to a USB drive to free up space, so as to make my computer faster. I have very little things running on my computer, and it is a relatively fast computer. I am able to deduce, then, that the problem lies with the LeoCAD program. @leozide , Please, either fix this problem, or tell me what to do.

ok, so i just tried the most common fix i can think of, the uninstall/reinstall method, and it still didn't fix a darned thing.

You probably changed something that made it slow. You can look at the Render tab in the Preferences Dialog and choose lower settings there.

Another option is to reset all settings. If you're on Windows you can do that by deleting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LeoCAD Software\LeoCAD in the registry.

leozide avatar Jul 01 '20 23:07 leozide

@leozide umm, could you show me a photo of what you mean by the render tab under preferences, and what to change? i mean, what option do i change?

BuilderSky avatar Jul 01 '20 23:07 BuilderSky

Something like this:

ok, so to clarify, it is just the parts menu that is being slow. i can insert cameras and lights, use select and pan, change snap positions, etc. as well as look at the timeline, but anything correlating with or changing the parts menu (i.e. the colors) takes a long time. i can't even scroll down the parts list without having to wait 1-1.5 minutes. (it took about 7-10 seconds before all of this started.)

BuilderSky avatar Jul 01 '20 23:07 BuilderSky

ok, i used the settings for the rendering that you have (except i don't have "Mesh LOD", whatever that is)

BuilderSky avatar Jul 01 '20 23:07 BuilderSky

@leozide i am on Windows 10, if that helps anything.

BuilderSky avatar Jul 02 '20 00:07 BuilderSky

@leozide ok, so i have done everything you said; i deleted that regedit file, re-did all of my settings, changed the rendering settings- as well as deleting all of the leocad files and starting out with a brand new LeoCAD. i still have the same problem.

Try disabling the icons in the parts list.

leozide avatar Jul 02 '20 22:07 leozide

@leozide Well, that certainly fixed it! Thank you! Is there any bypass way to put images up, so that I can still see what it looks like? And what is the reason for it acting like this, if u know?

It's hard to tell without any information, my guess is it's slow loading the parts to generate the thumbnails.

What do you have set for your parts library?

leozide avatar Jul 02 '20 23:07 leozide

@leozide ??? Parts library? You mean category? Or the size of icon? Even with smallest size, it still loaded slow.

😯 Umm, that area is actually empty on mine! I will have to find that file, hopefully it is the remedy! I will let you know! Thanks Leozide!

Don't add anything there.

Try deleting the folder %localappdata%\LeoCAD Software\LeoCAD\cache

leozide avatar Jul 02 '20 23:07 leozide

Ok, then what?

i wish these threads could be minimized, this became a looong thread... so, @leozide, here is what i have on my end. image

BuilderSky avatar Jul 03 '20 00:07 BuilderSky

What's in the folder I mentioned?

leozide avatar Jul 03 '20 00:07 leozide

@leozide In the file %localappdata%\LeoCAD Software\LeoCAD\cache,

image

A whole lot of these.

BuilderSky avatar Jul 03 '20 00:07 BuilderSky

@leozide , would I be able to email you for better communication? Instead of making this long thread...

BuilderSky avatar Jul 03 '20 01:07 BuilderSky

Better for future reference @BuilderSky

nathaneltitane avatar Jul 03 '20 03:07 nathaneltitane

Well, it just makes such a long thread... For future reference, I can always look at my email, and no one else likely wants to read such a long thread.

BuilderSky avatar Jul 03 '20 10:07 BuilderSky

@BuilderSky judging by your computer's poor performance and what the current solution is for you, it may come in handy to others. I doubt your personal email thread may come in handy to anyone else but you.

Please close this ticket if your problem is now resolved.

nathaneltitane avatar Jul 03 '20 17:07 nathaneltitane

I don't know... It's just that GitHub isn't a big texting app.

Try disabling the icons in the parts list.

Well, that certainly fixed it!

@leozide, suggest issue persist due to LeoCAD generate too many parts thumbnails files for cache & trying to write it on SSD/HDD.

Probably, I suggest that LeoCAD should not cache it on disk, instead thumbnails should be generated on-the-fly (without caching generated thumbnails as files per each part on SSD/HDD)

ghost avatar Jul 04 '20 03:07 ghost

@Symbian9 that would create a massive overhead for underpowered systems. And one wants the application to open almost as soon as you click on the icon, not 40s later...

nathaneltitane avatar Jul 04 '20 03:07 nathaneltitane

that would create a massive overhead for underpowered systems.

Then LeoCAD should use some sort of single file database for generated thumbnails on disk (something like MBTiles file format used by various GIS software for storing WMS/TMS tiles), instead of bloating SSD/HDD by cache consisting of thousands of thumbnail files.

ghost avatar Jul 04 '20 03:07 ghost

Thumbnails are not cached.

leozide avatar Jul 04 '20 14:07 leozide

Thumbnails are not cached.

What cached inside /home/user/.cache/LeoCAD Software/LeoCAD/?

ghost avatar Jul 04 '20 15:07 ghost

I'm back..... i just decided to uninstall it from this computer and put it on a different one that works even faster (has more memory.)
