[Feature request]: Change layout by device

Open noamross opened this issue 1 year ago • 3 comments

Would it be possible to have Gmail change the pane layout (right of inbox, below inbox, none), based on the device? I read on either a wide-screen desktop (right of inbox preferred) or a tall chromebook tablet (none preferred), and it would be great to set them separately, either by using a "set by this device" approach (cookie-based?) or just a CSS rule of screen width. Thanks!

Happy Holidays 🌟

There are some other settings that would be helpful to set differently on different devices, like content width/zoom, if this could be implemented in a general way.

Thanks for reaching out.

All of Simplify's preferences are device specific today. But I am working on changing that as many would like them to be synced. I will have a preference that allows people to turn off syncing so they remain device specific.

As for switching Gmail's reading pane preference automatically for a device (because Gmail's settings are synced and I can't change that), I won't say it is impossible but I've got a lot of other things ahead of this on my to do list so if I do it, it won't be for a while.

With syncing between devices, some things should be synced (more general settings) whereas other things are more device specific and for example screen-size related, so those should not sync probably.

For example, Content width should be device specific, but Keyboard shortcuts should be synced to any and all devices I use to avoid confusion or disaster (like in my case disabling Backspace to not delete stuff when all I want to do is go back to the previous page).
