Feature Request: Ability to "pin" labels in side bar.

Open hlwoodcock opened this issue 2 years ago • 3 comments

Hi Michael,

Something that I think would be super helpful is the ability to "pin" labels at the top of the label list that you see when you expand the main menu on the left. For example, I have A LOT of labels, but the vast majority I don't interact with on a daily basis. Thus, I was wondering if it would be possible to implement the ability to select which labels you want to have at the top of the label list for quick access?

Thanks for all of your efforts with Simplify!!

Thanks for the request. You can do this with Gmail today in two ways:

  1. Drag labels you don't use into the More menu (you can also just select "hide" for "Show in the label list" in Gmail Settings > Labels). This will leave the few labels you use most at the top. Annoyingly, this isn't applied in the Gmail mobile app, just on desktop.
  2. In the two sections (shown and hidden under "More"), labels are sorted alphabetically. You can put a "_" or any other symbol at the start of any label name you want shown at the top. This isn't very elegant but it will work in all places in Gmail and across all platforms.

Are you wanting a third way?

Hi Michael,

Thanks so much for the reply! Yes, I was thinking about a way to leave the vast majority of my labels "as is" and let them be sorted alphabetically, which just a handful at the top of the list.

I know you may not use the same workflow as me, but I like to use labels + keeping things unread as a way to mark a "task" as undone. Messages like this are easy to get lost in a regular inbox (and don't get me started on the annoyances of using "multiple inboxes".

Anyway, using the "Show if unread" label option is a way of ensuring that I get an overview of unread/undone things. Unfortunately, I just have too many labels and too many unread emails in total and was trying to find a solution that would allow me to keep the 5-10 most important labels at the top of that big list as a quick reference to items that need addressing.

Does all of this make sense?

Thanks again! Lee

Got it -- using the show if unread option would definitely remove the ability to promote some labels to always be at the top. I'll add this to my list of things to consider. It is a bit niche but maybe there are other use cases that would be well served by this.

On renaming them to add a symbol at the start of the name... is your objection that it is ugly seeing the "_" at the start of the label name? It might be easier to have Simplify take a symbol and replace it everywhere if it is at the start of a label name than build a whole system to keep certain labels above others.
