Permalinks behave non-intuitevely

Version 1.9.4

Permalinks appear to be broken in all cases I tried.

One Example:

  1. Using a company with some AP transactions for the current year.
  2. Goto General Journal -> Search
  3. Enter Date Range 1/1/2020 to 12/31/2020.
  4. Check All unapproved approved.
  5. Add memo and cleared to report.
  6. Click Continue
  7. View report that is not empty.
  8. click [permalink] at the bottom of the report.
  9. report refreshes
  10. Goto Reports -> Income Statement. (Just to get off the current screen)
  11. Go back to General Journal -> Search.

Expected to see a permalink. Instead nothing appeared.

I could not get a permalink in any other report I tried.

This seems to be based on a misunderstanding what a "permalink" is or ought to be. The idea of a Permalink is that you get a link which you can share with your colleagues and when inserted into the browser, returns exactly the same report (or at least a search with exactly the same parameters as you used). The link you clicked under "[ permalink ]" is supposed to be that link. In other words: it's supposed to be the link you can use with "Copy link" and pass it to a colleague.

Instead, you're expecting it to be published to some repository which results in a list of prior reports shown for the user to select old settings from. Am I correct?

OK that was not how I expected it to work. To expect a user to right click and select copy to capture the link in the browser is not an a very good UI, IMO.

I would have expected the browser to automatically copy the link when the button is clicked or to bring up further instructions.

But, yes it does work as you have indicated. I have added a new section to the book that describes how permalinks work.

If I could I would mark this as a low priority enhancement.
