Software Defined VPN so want to do non SSH

Guys, I use ZeroTier to create a Software VPN amongst a number of machines. Rather than put the encryption overhead on the machines for both SSH and VPN - i would like to just backup to the remote host running the Rsync Daemon and thus not use encryption - this does not seem possible ?

My alternate option would be to enable NFS on the machine that will be the destination and restrict it to only the VPN hosts - but i would prefer to go down the rsync path - anyone have any ideas on this ?
